This department provides dedicated and excellent service to our customers by providing reliable and safe methods of solid waste collections for residential and commercial customers while ensuring a clean and healthy environment for the City's residents and commercial establishments.


 Household Waste (Garbage)

Food waste, cans, bottles, paper products, boxes, clothing, small household electronic items, e.g. TV's, computers, VCR's, microwaves, lamps, fans, vacuum cleaners, mirrors, door glass, etc. are collected on your assigned day.  Note:  all large glass items must be taped to minimized shatter.  The green City-issue dump containers must be used for all items when practical, with a limit of two (2) 96 gallon containers per household or business per week.  Boxes must be broken down and tied if necessary.  Do not use boxes as containers. 

Yard Debris

Vegetation, leaves, grass/hedge clippings, small limbs/branches, garden plants, etc. are collected on your assigned yard debris day.  All small materials must be containerized.  Acceptable containers are city-issue dump cans, 32 gallon cans with lids,  and paper composting bags designed for trash.  Limbs may not exceed 4 feet in length/ 4 inches in diameter,and three cubic yards in volume per scheduled collection.  All yard debris must be placed at the street in an orderly manner allowing collection crews and equipment reasonable access.  Yard debris may not be mixed with other materials, e.g. paper, plants ,pots, rocks,sand, dirt, lumber, landscaping timbers, etc.  Any and all debris generated by the removal of a whole tree, will be the responsibility of the property owner for disposal.

Brown Trash

Includes furniture, mattresses, box springs, carpeting, porcelain commodes, large plastic toys, dry trash, etc.  Carpeting and padding must be rolled and tied, with rolls not exceeding six feet in length, 24 inches in diameter and 75 pounds in weight.  Collected
each Thursday.  NO BUILDING MATERIALS (LUMBER, SIDING, DOORS, WINDOWS, ROOFING MATERIALS, ETC.)  WILL BE COLLECTED

These materials can be taken by the homeowner to the Berkeley County Landfill which is located off of Old US 52 going to Moncks Corner. They are open Monday—Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Metals

Washer/dryer, refrigerator/freezer, window AC, dishwasher, push lawnmowers, and other miscellaneous household metals.  Items excluding appliances may not exceed four (4) feet in lengh and seventy five (75) pounds in weight.  All wire must be rolled and tied and placed at the street in an orderly manner.  Collected each Friday.  NO AUTOMOBILE PARTS WILL BE PICKED UP.

 


 

WASTE THAT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE 

INCLUDES, BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO: 
Mixed waste, automobile parts, building materials, pallets, flammables, lubricating oils, oxidizers, poisons, fertilizers, insecticides, medical waste, paints, liquids, tires, batteries, dirt, sand, gravel, concrete blocks, masonry mixes, pressurized cylinders, central AC units, contractor generated waste, loose waste, or waste deemed to be hazardous/harmful to personnel or equipment.

Materials must be containerized and placed separately by category at curbside by 8:00 A.M. on collection day but no sooner than 24 hours in advance of scheduled collection. 

 


 Streets & Sidewalks

A large percentage of all streets within the City of Hanahan belong to the South Carolina Department of Transportation.   Major repair to roadways and to storm drain structures belonging to SCDOT are referred to that agency for repair.

Public Works Department oversees the fabrication, installation, and maintenance of street name signs throughout the City.   If you should notice any street signs down, please contact Public Works.

 

Extra Green Dump Containers

The City of Hanahan issue green dump containers primary use is household waste/garbage collections, and must be used.  Secondary use of the city container is yard waste but must not interfere with the containers use for household waste collection. 
Residents wishing to purchase a second City issue container may do so by going to the Building and Codes Office at Hanahan City Hall, 1255 Yeamans Hall Road.  Price for a 96 gallon container is $60.00 each with a limit of two (2) containers per household or business.

NOTE: Dump containers other than City of Hanahan issue will not be serviced.

CONTAINER DISPOSAL FOR BUILDING MATERIALS

The City of Hanahan, in cooperation with Berkeley County, is pleased to inform you that beginning in September, a container for the disposal of residential building materials will be available.

  1. All loads must be tarped.
  2. No contractor materials will be accepted
  3. Hanahan resident generated materials only - ID is required
  4. Resident will be required to load materials into dumpster
  5. Hanahan code enforcement officer will be on duty.
  6. Hours of operation will be from 8a.m. - 4p.m. on the 3rd Saturday of each month.
  7. Collections will alternate monthly between the two (2) locations listed below:

           A.  On Murray Drive across form Hanahan Middle School in September
           B.  Otranto across from Fire Station 2 in October
