Mission Statement

The Building and Codes Department’s Mission Statement reflects its protection of life, health and property as a solemn responsibility of the highest order. Recognizing the public’s trust bestowed upon individuals engaged in the administration and enforcement of building regulatory codes, the Building and Codes Department advocates its commitments to a standard of professional behavior that exemplifies the highest ideals and principles of ethical conduct. This is accomplished through the enactment and enforcement of effective codes and standards to ensure the structural strength, sanitation, fire protection, adequate light and ventilation, and other essential elements of life safety in the built environment. The Building Department accomplishes their Mission with a maximum goal in customer service and efficiency for its citizens and businesses of Hanahan.

What We Do

Building & Codes Department strives to ensure land development and zoning regulations are administered consistently with the policies and goals established by the City Council and the adopted Comprehensive Plan.

The department assists the citizens of Hanahan and its development community, the Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, Board of Examiners and Review, Design Control Committee and the City’s elected officials.

Building & Codes provides comprehensive land-use and environmental planning, zoning and permitting services, development review, and enforcement of building, zoning, development and environmental codes, in support of the City’s vision, mission, and goals.
