The Junior Police Academy was created in 2016 by Sergeant Ricardo Perry with the purpose of allowing the youth of our city to learn more about policing and the Hanahan Police Department. Each Junior Police Academy session is 2-weeks long and during the sessions, participants receive presentations on such topics as criminal law, search and seizure, traffic stops, and crime scene processing. Along with the classroom training, the participants also participate in roll-playing based scenarios where they respond to calls, process crime scenes, and perform traffic stops. Our police officers provide demonstrations during each session that include live demonstrations by our K-9 unit. The first week of each session also includes a field trip to the Criminal Justice Academy in Columbia, SC for an all access tour.

Besides the educational components of the “JPA”, it allows the participants to interact with officers from the police department and build relationships. Building relationships with the youth of city is one of the core components of community policing. If you want to learn more about the Junior Police Academy, please email Sergeant Ricardo Perry at rperry@cityofhanahan.com.

Dear Parent:

Thank you for taking an interest in the Hanahan Police Department, Junior Police Academy summer program.

The purpose of this Junior Police Academy is to expose young men and women to the field of Law Enforcement. This academy is for young people who are interested in police service, community involvement, and/or government. Please understand, this is not a “boot camp” or “scared straight” program for young children.

The goal of the program is for cadets to enjoy themselves while gaining an understanding of police training and services.  The Junior Police Academy will consist of physical training, lectures, presentations, hands on activities and field trips. The cadets will learn how to march and work together in groups called squads. They will also learn the importance of being physically fit, staying drug free, teamwork and respect. At the end of the two week academy, cadets will participate in a culmination ceremony.

It is very important that the children attending the Junior Academy adhere to the rules and guidelines outlined in this application, this is to make sure everyone is safe throughout their time together.

Please be sure to read and review with your child all the information in this packet. If you have any questions feel free to contact Sgt. Perry at rperry@cityofhanahan.com or by calling 843-509-7775.

Thank you again for your interest, we look forward to working with the young men and women in our community.
