The Junior Police Academy was created in 2016 by Sergeant Ricardo Perry with the purpose of allowing the youth of our city to learn more about policing and the Hanahan Police Department. Each Junior Police Academy session is 2-weeks long and during the sessions, participants receive presentations on such topics as criminal law, search and seizure, traffic stops, and crime scene processing. Along with the classroom training, the participants also participate in roll-playing based scenarios where they respond to calls, process crime scenes, and perform traffic stops. Our police officers provide demonstrations during each session that include live demonstrations by our K-9 unit. The first week of each session also includes a field trip to the Criminal Justice Academy in Columbia, SC for an all access tour.
Besides the educational components of the “JPA”, it allows the participants to interact with officers from the police department and build relationships. Building relationships with the youth of city is one of the core components of community policing. If you want to learn more about the Junior Police Academy, please email Sergeant Ricardo Perry at .
