Karen grew up on a farm in England and relocated to the United States in 1990. Karen has two children and 6 grandchildren. She started working as an Animal Control Officer on 11th November, 1997 for the City of Hanahan and have been here ever since (20 years).
Karen says, “I love my job as I am able to help animals and be around them most of the day. In fact I have never lived without at least one dog. At this present time I have 14 dogs. (Yes, you did read that correctly). They are all small dogs, mostly dachshunds or mixes and a couple of Lhasa Apsos and 3 Chihuahuas. Most people on average own 1-4 dogs but you are talking about an Animal Control Officer here and with this job it is hard not to try and save them all. All my dogs are rescues and because I live in the country I can have as many as I can take care of. I also own several ducks and chickens, which I also rescued. As I have 18 acres of land I can do it and my plan is that when I retire I can set up a rescue facility for all the elderly dogs who would otherwise be euthanized.”
